How to Play Higher/Lower

Higher/Lower is a free daily geography game. Every day at midnight UTC a new set of five country comparisons is published — the same puzzle for every player around the world. Your job is simple: look at two countries side by side and decide which one has the higher value for the given statistic.

Each round reveals a different statistic — Population, GDP (USD billions), Land Area (km²), UNESCO World Heritage Sites, or UN membership year. The two countries are chosen so the difference is meaningful but not obvious: you cannot simply guess "the big country wins." Ratios are kept between 1.05× and 3.0× to keep every round genuinely challenging.

Click or tap the card you think is correct. The actual values are revealed immediately after your pick. A filled dot marks a correct answer; a faded dot marks a miss. After five rounds your total score is shown along with a shareable result card.

You get one attempt per day. There is no going back and no replaying the daily puzzle — like Wordle or Connections, the daily puzzle resets at midnight UTC and the previous day's puzzle is gone. If you want more rounds, switch to Levels mode for 60 hand-curated level packs at your own pace.

About the Game

Higher/Lower was built as part of Stoop, a small collection of free daily browser games. The premise came from a simple observation: most geography trivia tests whether you know a capital city or a flag — facts that reward rote memorisation. Comparing statistics tests something different: intuition about scale, economic geography, and how countries relate to one another. You might know that India has a bigger population than Australia, but do you know whether Pakistan or Nigeria has more UNESCO sites?

The statistics used — population, land area, GDP, UNESCO heritage sites, and UN membership year — were chosen because they represent genuinely interesting dimensions of a country. Land area reveals how deceptive map projections can be. GDP comparisons expose surprising economic imbalances between neighbours. UN membership year traces the history of decolonisation and the formation of new states. Each stat category makes you think about the world differently.

Country pairs are generated deterministically from the date so every player sees the exact same puzzle. The seed algorithm ensures that pairs stay in the comfortable difficulty band: close enough to be uncertain, far enough to be unambiguous in hindsight. No account or registration is needed. Your streak and statistics are stored locally in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.

Higher/Lower is completely free to play and always will be. If you enjoy it, the best way to support it is to share your result and come back tomorrow.
